For Mary Burmeister

Written upon hearing of
Mary Burmeister's passing,
January 27, 2008

The winter rains let up a bit today.
I held my ring fingers
Walking uphill to the pharmacy.
From where I park, thereâ's up
And down in both directions —
Two hillsides cut through by a creek
Back in the time when redwoods grew
On the Oakland ridges.
It was quite a walk —
Early daffodils bowing in the rain
To avoid collecting
Too much water,
A rooster and three hens sauntering
On an unfenced lawn,
Latin hip hop next door,
And next to that a man with a deep chest cold
Coughing. Would you have knocked
On the door and taught him something
He could do to help himself?
Tyrrel and Gillian's garden overgrown with
Native plants is wiggling
Toward spring. Someone has dug around
A stalk of fuzzy green
To give it room to breathe.

I don't need to hold my ring fingers
Going uphill as much as I used to.
My lungs don't ache or feel dry
Any more. But just to be on what we call
The safe side, I held my ring fingers
As I walked uphill.
