In the Kitchen

My other mural that lives only in memory was done in a commercial kitchen. A long wall on one side of the space led from the main door to a back storage area. Industrial light fixtures cast arcs of shadow on the wall. I decided to make the arcs the heart of my composition.

I had done a watercolor of similar arcs of light playing on the stage behind the speaker's podium in the main theater of Dwinnell Hall at the Berkeley Campus of the University of California. I adapted my watercolor to the kitchen. The space I had to play with was about ten feet high and forty feet long.

A rolling staircase was provided, an industrial version in metal of freestanding wooden stair steps I had seen pictured in 18^th and 19^th century European libraries. The staircase was a joy to use. It had a balcony at the top which held me and my materials with plenty of room to move around. I learned a great deal about size and scale while painting this mural because it was genuinely BIG!

I didn't take pictures of the work and it was painted over without my knowledge some years later. The lesson learned was document, document, document!
