Dusk at the Bookstore

Too little money in my pocket
For the huge book of colorful Buddhas
I came here to find.

I turn to an inexpensive paperback
Of Rumi.
Half a translation satisfies
As much of my longing
As it can.
Half only.
I do not find the poet dancing
On the page.
Many pages fall,
One following another.
None exactly speaks itself.
There are too many other
Pages like it.

Above the shelves
Farther up the wall
Than any title on a spine —
Two squares of blue gray dotted sunset cloud
Show through two
Dusty windows.
There is nothing like it —
Before or since
And I thank Rumi.
