Gas Station, Orange County

Behind the pumps
Under the green roofed shed
He parts string,
Lovingly, carefully,
Separating the yellow from the white,
Nylon from jute,
As though the strings are memories of friends.
Finches chirp in two plum trees
Leafing silently over the shed
From houses stacked
Between the freeway and the mall.
Carefully, slowly
He ties each string
Securing it first to his wheeled cart,
Then to his four black plastic bags of cardboard.
The bill of his cap shades his eyes.
His long moustache
Follows the curve of the shadow.
Slowly, carefully moving as though
He has all the time in the world,
As though the two plum trees
Are a spreading grove,
As though the birds are flocks of melody,
As though the roof of the shed
Protects the patio of his hacienda,
As though the plastic bags of trash
Are a gift of the singing branches.
